the early writing is a bit more readable too. some of the later books got... incoherent.

I pretty much gave up on the series after [SPOILER] was [SPOILERED]* in a set of disconnected panels, and then they went to [SPOILER].

*that was when we learned [SPOILER] was gay.

Is that what happened? I was looking at her old stuff the other day, and some of it was just lovely, not perfect, but a good sense of flow and movement. The more recent stuff is just stumpy and lumpy and not good, there's no flow to it, and some of her techniques that used to be good were overdone to the point of caricature. Like I said, not good.
