Worldbuilding

[personal profile] philstar22 2015-11-18 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
I'm also looking for fics, preferably of scifi or fantasy fandoms, that have really good worldbuilding. Where they exapand on canon in interesting ways and the author put a lot of thought and effort into the world the built. Preferably in longer fics, but one-shots are good too.

Well, I do tend to like worldbuilding myself, and I write gen-y stuff (even when there's romance). Most of my stuff is in either Shingeki no Kyojin fandom or Fullmetal Alchemist.

For FMA:
Diaspora - a post-2003 series AU where instead of Ed ending up in Germany in the 20s, he ends up in a sci-fi setting where dimensional travelers pop up all the time (but his life sucks anyway). It's only one chapter and will probably never be more, but that's 21k and it does also stand ok on its own.

Mirrorworld - Ed finds a way to prove to Alfons that he's actually from a parallel universe, and then they both try to open the Gate and get back to Ed's world. Features a LOT of theorizing about how alchemy works, political troubles and drama back home, the 4th dimension, pain, and a romance between Ed and Alfons and more pain. It's almost 300k.

For SNK:
with great power (I could do hell of a lot more) - a superhero-AU (which I think that I kind of phoned in on the worldbuilding department, but the readers have been pleased?). Erwin leads a team of B-list superheroes who are more focused on getting the job done than forgiving old enemies, which doesn't make them popular. Then they run into Levi, a supervillain who might be the most powerful shapeshifter on the planet, and Erwin decides that reforming him is the way to go. He doesn't really consider all the implications of that, or what it will do to his team. ('bout 40k so far).

I don't know if any of these are up your alley, but if they are, enjoy :)

ETA I started Mirrorworld a LONG time ago, so the writing is pretty rough at the beginning. But it improves heaps, if you can get past that!

This Harry Potter fanfic series does have worldbuilding going for it:

But it is angsty. ANGSTY.

DA

I'd like to point out that in the later installments it also gets rather gory. I admit I didn't finish it because at one point things went so far down the gutter that I couldn't keep going. But until the point that I read (book six, IIRC)? It was basically "things are awful! A solution! 2000 words of things going well! LOL things are even worse now, everyone is going to die, have some graphic description of torture". Lather, rinse, repeat.

Hrmmmmmmmm.
Since you said self-reccing is okay.... I've got a few you might like?
With No Direction Home is a Firefly AU that goes from Earth that Was to the Battle of Serenity Valley, following Spike and Angel.

Treadmill is Supernatural, alternate universe. Still hunters, but a very different world.

The World Where Yesternight You Died is an RPF Supernatural Iiiiiiiin Spaaaaaaaaace!! With spaceships and space marines. Also a WIP, just so you know.

Scaling Heaven is Spike and Xander iiiin spaaaaaace (and pretty old) but still - total au-worldbuilding.

An for fantasy, a Sleeping Beauty AU, RPF of Supernatural Le Bel Endormi dans la Tour, and also AU/RPF/Supernatural of Swiss Family Robinson. At My Feet Eternity.

I don't expect you to read any or all, and sorry if they're not in your fandoms, I can't actually remember that many details about that many people. Hope you find on you enjoy! :)

GreenGecko's 'Resonance' series has amazing worldbuilding for a Harry Potter fic. She has a way of adding details that fit in perfectly with the world while still being better and more thought-out than the books themselves.
