Question

I'm writing for an exchange and I've come up with a story idea. The thing is, it's kind of complicated and I don't want to write an epic. What are your thoughts on stories that have lengthy parts that tell and don't show? I want to do this with the setup for the story, where the opening three or four pages are just explaining what's happened to the present point (told from a character POV).

I don't ascribe to the adage that you always have to show, don't tell but this is pretty heavy at the beginning of the story so I wonder if that's offputting. And I wonder if it might be more acceptable in a fic exchange. Thoughts? What would you feel getting this for a gift?

It depends on how willing you are to compromise your style. It's possible to tell very complex and long stories by writing snapshots of key moments. Off the top of my head, I can think of this (http://archiveofourown.org/works/1265572) fic that does that.

I don't think my recipient wants anything too weird.

I would probably try to avoid it as much as possible. Is there any way that you can tell the story giving enough detail within it to make it make sense, without explaining everything?

A bit OT but it kind of annoys me when people ask for really complicated stuff in an exchange. Like... be reasonable, dude. This is like signing up for a Secret Santa at work but specifying that you only want sweaters that are hand knitted from Mongolian yak hair gathered humanely in the eastern steppes during a full moon, or bath products that are fair trade all natural artisanal coconut-based, but not sourced from coconuts grown anywhere in Asia.
