Medical Questions?

[personal profile] philstar22 2015-11-18 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
How important are follow up appointments? My podiatrist wanted to have a follow up with me. It was scheduled today, but because of my strep I cancelled it. I was going to reschedule it for next week, but my mother claims a follow up isn't necessary (and hinted she didn't want to pay for it). There isn't anything new the doctor could do. I already got the shots, he gave me the stretches to do. And according to my mother he just wants more money from me. I can't exactly afford the copay for another appointment myself.

Hmm, where do you live that you have to pay for follow-ups? Just curious. Don't have any experience with podiatrists, sorry.

US, Texas specifically. And I've never been to a doctor where you didn't have to pay for every visit including follow-ups.

Wow. That's crazy. One follow-up is included in private health care here (Brazil). Well, at least I've never come across a doctor who didn't do that.

Usually they're scheduled for a reason. That reason may be to see how a patient is progressing, to have a chance to determine if a treatment regimen needs to be changed, or to attempt to diagnose a condition in the event that the symptoms are initially unclear.

Best practice would be to go.

Really depends on what you were seeing the doctor for.

Can you contact your doctor through email or a phone call, maybe leaving him a message? Explain you had to cancel because you were sick and, due to various things going on, will have a hard time scheduling a new appointment for a long time, so how urgent is it that you come back in soon? If the answer is something like "Oh, that's okay. Just come back when you get a chance, whenever," then you can probably just quietly "forget" to reschedule.

A followup allows the doctor to see how well you're progressing and if any changes need to be made to the way you're doing things. I'd try to keep it.

As someone who also has plantar fasciitis, I'd say to go. As he needs to evaluate how the shots worked and if the stretches are helping. And to determine if this is the course for your future.

Out of curiosity, why did you cancel for strep? I've had strep a million times, and I wouldn't think a foot appointment would need to be canceled for it.

Honestly, it is my first time having strep, I have a cold too, I feel pretty miserable, and my mother thought cancelling it was the best idea. I didn't know any better, so I just went along with it.

Thank you for cancelling, especially if you're still contagious. Nobody needs strep.
*sends you wellness vibes*

No offense, but is your mother a podiatry expert, then? My guess is no, so she doesn't actually know that the follow up isn't necessary. Co-pays are a giant pain, but the reason why doctors schedule follow ups is to check on your progress to make sure the treatment is going as planned. I would call the podiatrist, explain about the strep throat and reschedule.
