Do you ever worry

(Anonymous) 2015-11-18 06:27 am (UTC)(link)
when you're out late at night? I've always taken walks or gone to the grocery store at night, even after midnight, but these days I feel uneasy everytime I see some guy, or worse yet, a bunch of guys. I keep wondering if they see me as some sort of loose woman who is asking for it by being out so late.

Well yeah. I don't often go out late at night by myself, and when I do it's usually to a store where I try to park near the entrance or near a light. I lock my doors immediately and try to be aware of my surroundings but nothing is 100% foolproof and I'm a short, not particularly strong woman. It wouldn't take a very large guy to overpower me, even if he were unarmed. Worrying and taking precautions is a sensible thing to do.

Odds are that's exactly how they see you. don't be out alone late. I know the ideal answer is to teach men not to rape, but most men who need to learn that don't care and sad as it is we need to deal with that. Be safe. Don't be out late, don't be out alone.

oh fuck off. that's beyond paranoid. most men couldn't care less about some "loose woman" walking by them at night. The whole "back alley rape" thing barely happens AT ALL, ANYWHERE.

nayrt

Wow, being told to fuck off for telling people to take precautions. Back alley rapes might be rare, but there's no harm in being safe. It's not like anon said all women should be locked away after 5 pm wearing sheets that cover them from head to toe so that they don't tempt those poor, helpless men with their evil, evil vaginas.

That's funny, because such an attack recently took place on my college campus:

The woman managed to get away before she was raped but frankly, that was sheer luck. The place where she was assaulted is in a wooded area on campus, not far from the union. I imagine that many women at Indiana U are feeling a bit "paranoid" right now, huh?

Oh there was one case where something almost happened so it makes total sense to be irrationally afraid.
Sure. Get off the media for a bit. Puts things back in perspective.

Oh sure, two guys tried to rape a woman at her school less than a week ago, and they haven't been caught. AYRT is such a big silly for being worried that there could be a couple of would-be serial rapists on the campus who'll have improved their technique next time around.

sometimes you have to be out alone. don't blame victims.

I go for walks by myself at night (usually between 10 and 12 at night) all the time. I also walk to the grocery store or to a convenience store by myself at night all the time. I am aware that I could be attacked, but I'd rather take the risk than let it stop me.

It's important to have a feel for your neighborhood, though. In the eight years I've lived in my neighborhood I've never had anyone harass me or approach me in a way that felt threatening when I was by myself. In fact, I've almost never been approached or spoken to at all while out by myself at night. Maybe it's a Canadian thing? We genuinely are a pretty non-obtrusive lot, in general. Also, gun violence is not a concern for me. If it were I might feel differently about this issue, I don't know.

I used to feel pretty relaxed about walking at night. But a couple of times I've had guys "chivalrously" insist on walking me home, which made me really uncomfortable, although neither guy did more than make an officious pest of himself. (Especially the one who kept going on and on about what a catch he was...)

Yeah I do feel some fear walking alone at night. When I see other women I relax a little, but when I see men I do get slightly defensive especially if they are alone, or rowdy.
