That...Is not how it works.

My sister's friend and the friend's bf stopped washing their hair for months, and I honestly couldn't tell: their hair didn't look greasy at all. I even touched the bf's hair, and it felt fine. They said it had looked and felt gross at first, but then after a while it went back to normal.

They still washed their bodies, though! And I've been acquainted with enough people who don't bathe/shower for very long periods of time (several mentally ill people and a couple of angsty teenage boys) to state definitively that that is not something the human body is able to regulate.

The success of the no-poo (no shampoo) method depends on several things. If you have light, short hair, don't sweat a lot, don't move in very smelly or dirty environments etc., the method can be a huge success.

But it your hair is thick and long, your scalp is especially greasy or your hair tends to absorb stink and dirt, just rinsing with water will go some way, but you can get a build up of fats that will get rancid/oxidised in time or in the sun.

I haven't heard of anyone with a fetish for that yet.

But you can of course use other fat-dissolvers than shampoo, for example citric acid or vinegar.

nayrt - I know it sounds really counter intuitive, but there is some evidence to suggest that yeah, it does work. Not perfectly, mind you. We're more used to people having little to no natural body odor thanks to daily personal hygiene and soaps, but if you think about it, this level of cleanliness is a really recent development in history. Even our grandmothers probably didn't bathe as often as we do and people managed to not be gross.

Yes it is, at least the hair portion.

Shampoo is what makes your hair gross and greasy, mostly because it strips your hair of natural oils and keeps your scalp from regulating itself. That's why we HAVE to use conditioner to follow it up.

But people who swear by no shampoo often report their hair will stop being so gross after a week or two, looks and feels better, smoother, and even a little thicker.

Does their head itch? My head itches really bad if I don't shampoo for three or more days. And it also feels greasier.

Maybe it would work in the long run...but it's not really worth trying to me.

(Plus I like the way the shampoo and conditioner make my hair smell.)

nope. but the problem is getting there. if you shampoo your hair and strip it from all natural oils your scalp is basically working overtime trying to get them back -> super greasy if you don't wash it for a few days

when you leave it unwashed and bear with it (it will take time, from days to weeks to even months on some people), eventually your body realizes that it doesn't need to try so hard

And in the meantime you look like a greasy rat? This isn't feasible if you have to go to work etc.

Huh.

Honestly, good for people who make that work! I don't think potentially months of waiting for my body to readjust is worth it to me though, given how uncomfortable it is to go just a few days without shampooing.

yes... it is.
