"Return to Oz" was not nearly as light and bright as the 30s WoO, but then there is no way an 80s movie could be anything like a 30s movie anyway. I think RtO is comparable to "The Neverending Story" for darkness - they are from the same era anyway (and I recall seeing both in downtown Sydney cinemas when they were first released).
