How do you ever know that, though? Take Lovecraft for example. If I were around in his time I could know that reading his works is actually promoting homophobia sexism and racism of the worst order, but he's dead now and nothing is known about who profits from his works or what they feel about social issues. So that being the case, is it moral to read lovecraft?

Uh... just because you don't know who owns the rights to what doesn't mean this information is unknowable. In Lovecraft's case, copyright is a very complicated issue but there is some information about it:
