TMI: body parts

so I transferred to another area recently and started working with surgical specimens. One of the things that I started doing that I'm now doing several times a week is frozen sections, where we flash freeze and cut tissue during surgery for intraoperative consult, which is, to me, really exciting and cool, especially since I never thought I'd be qualified to do something like that when I graduated. Today I got a brain tumor that needed to be diagnosed and I had to call the fellow and get instructions, then cut it in half to take a section out of it, and I had this moment of, holy shit, I am literally cutting up pieces of a living person's brain.

I don't know what I expected when I started searching for full time work a little more than a year ago, but it definitely wasn't that.

Okay...you get the specimens AFTER they've been removed from the person or you cut them from the person?

I am not a surgeon xDDDDDDD

The OR nurse brings me a specimen that the surgeon wants examined, and then I cut it up. It's fresh though, only a few minutes out of the patient's body.

Interestingly, I usually don't do the actual cutting - residents do a lot of it, but for some reason with neuro cases, we're supposed to do it ourselves. *shrug* (to clarify, I am definitely less trained in grossing than your average resident)

Microsectioning for histology is pretty cool work, definitely. lol I once had a supervisor who decided it would be cool to put a ham through a microtome to get "the thinnest slices of deli meat possible".

I put a hot dog through while training. It wasn't the best since those are so fatty. Sure interesting to look at the slide though. I've heard from other people who have done hot dogs that you can identify all kinds of shit in there that's definitely NOT muscle or fat, lol.

The ham didn't look like anything except muscle tissue and a bit of collagen, as one might expect. I have also heard of people putting various fast food items through to somewhat hilarious results.

Getting to section post-mortem brains is also great fun; apparently one of my coworkers discovered a teratoma that way that had a bunch of what looked like retinal cells in it.
