I'm not a big fan of this, either. I'm in a minority group as well and I get that not having representation is tough but some people seem so intent on the austistic headcanon thing that it seems a little sad and weird. Especially when there's so little support for it in canon. Oh, someone was socially awkward once? Autistic! Someone once misinterpreted someone else's behavior? Autistic! Like okay, I feel bad for you guys not having honest to god autistic characters in media, but this is a bit like pretending Hannibal is your IRL boyfriend just because you don't have one and really really want one.

Agreed. It's like they don't think about the fact that social awkwardness could be related to plenty of other things besides autism. Maybe the person's just naturally shy. Maybe they don't feel comfortable in a new setting, or around a certain person. Maybe they're having an off day, who knows?

I know the traits you mention can be associated with autism, but just having them in and of themselves doesn't automatically mean they ARE a sign of autism.

Exactly. Everyone's experienced moments of social awkwardness or moments where they missed a social cue. To seize upon moments like that as proof of autism feels like grasping at straws.

This is why I hate the headcanon that Ghoulia in Monster High is autistic. She can't speak? Autistic! You know, ignoring the fact that she is a zombie who speaks as a zombie, who have their OWN language.

She's way too smart, she must be savant level smart. Autistic!

She's awkward, autistic! You know, despite the fact that she makes friends rather easily and isn't weird about social intrractions or gatherings. She's no Cleo or Frankie, but she's no hunched over recluse in the corner either.

Sure, those are stereotypical, but that gets used as for WHY she's ~totally autistic~

Ugh.

I'm reminded of a list I've seen circulating on the Internet, of "Famous People Known to Have Autism/Aspergers." It includes Michael Palin (possibly because he's played a couple of socially awkward characters? And his love of trains gets mentioned sometimes? But never any symptoms because he has none) and Jane Austen (who as far as I know left no diaries and very little correspondence) because themes in her writing include class and how individuals fit into society.

Look, I get that if you have a condition, it might be encouraging to know of successful people who also had/have it... but fantasy-diagnosing someone who's been dead for two hundred years? Or a guy who not only displays no symptoms of the condition, but could actually be used as a reference point for the opposite end of the spectrum? That just strikes me as totally counterproductive.

By contrast, I guess, creating autistic headcanons for imaginary people, as opposed to real ones, is not such a problem for me. Unless of course a person can't accept that their headcanon is, in fact, all in their head.

"Unless of course a person can't accept that their headcanon is, in fact, all in their head."

The trouble is that they then pull the old -assburger makes me unable to lie so I have the one true character reading- bullshit on anyone who tries to point out that their headcanon is not canon. There was one particular retard in the Ranma fandom who did that a few years ago and managed to pretty much single handedly shut down several fan sites just by making it too toxic to deal with. Their self diagnosed assburger trumped everyone else, according to them.

AYRT-- Good grief. Being unable to lie doesn't mean a person is incapable of being mistaken.
