Red Dwarf

I have just re-started the series for the first time since I was way too young and I want to know, is anyone else getting really bad racist vibes from Rimmer? This is making me super uncomfortable and I doubt I'll be able to continue. JFC does everything have to be so vile?

It's been a while since I watched it, but wasn't he more of a classist? "I'm your superior, I make the decisions, blaablaa".

It's been a while for me too but I'd agree with the previous comment... it seems it was more about class. Rimmer's a very petty individual, exactly the type to lord his superior position over everyone else, even if his position is only technically one notch above. There's also class issues going on, which if you're not British, it's harder to pick up on. Lister's from Liverpool, which to many Brits carries with it the stereotype of being ignorant, uneducated and criminally inclined.

Um, it's a British comedy so yes, everything has to be vile. British comedy cannot wrap its head around the concept of humor that doesn't originate in vileness and ugliness.

TBH it sounds like either you don't have a very wide experience of British comedy, or you just don't like comedy.

Benny Hill and his rappe fest.

Congratulations, that's one example of British comedy that's over 20 years old. I guess this is your way of telling us you don't have a very wide experience of British comedy...

I love comedy, but I have never encountered any British comedy that wasn't entirely based on being viciously nasty or sneering and/or wallowing in second-hand embarrassment and schadenfreude at asshole-losers.

It is possible my experience isn't wide enough though. So if you have any recs for british comedy that isn't like this, I'd be very happy to accept them.

Britcoms do tend more towards gallows humour, it is true, and appreciating the absurdity of the human condition more than US sitcoms tend to. That is not to say there is not a tremendous overlap of course. As pointed out Benny Hill is loved in America and Frasier and M*A*S*H* were loved in the UK.

Nah, he is a snob not a racist.

Chiming in with everyone else: He's a classist snob, not a racist. He looks down on Lister because he's working class, nothing at all to do with the colour of his skin. Same with the likes of Petersen; it's not that he's foreign, it's that he's lower class.

That said, Rimmer's still an arsehole - just not a racist one.
