Re: Jessica Jones AKA I am excite

I love Jessica, I love Trish, I love Luke, I love all the different relationships and I hate Kilgrave so fucking much and want to punch him for a thousand years but David is doing a great job with him.

Yes, yes, a thousand times yes to all of that. Especially on David Tennant; he is a terrific actor.
I can't decide if David should never be allowed to play villains, EVER, or play all the villains, all the time. Holy fuck is he an utterly insane and psychotic monster. As a fan of the comics I'm completely and utterly opposed to Jessica/Kilgrave, it's a huge NOtp for me. But fuck me if I don't ship it in the show (somebody help. I am the worst).

I don't have a tumblr but if you posted the links here I'd love to read your posts about the episodes! I am, as you can see, equally enthusiastic about the show. :D

I knew David was a talented actor, but I admit that I haven't seen him in much outside Who. He clearly has some range...

Which is both a good thing and a terrifying thing. He deserves loads of credit for how well he's pulled off the character this far, but the writing on this show is also really good imo. And the directing, everything, it's all very tight and makes Kilgrave feel like a perverse, ever-present threat. Ugh, I hate him.

Holy fuck is he an utterly insane and psychotic monster.

Monster is exactly the word I'd use for him! Exactly. (I think I did, even, lol.)

I know what it's like to enjoy monstrous characters.

But fuck me if I don't ship it in the show

Well, I ship Hannibal/Will so I know what it's like to ship fucked up pairings, but I can't do this one. At least not yet. Maybe something could change, but with the (apparent?) rape I'm thinking probably not...

But you aren't even the only person to express interest in that pairing on this comm, so hey, you aren't alone.

Now I'm kind of embarrassed about even mentioning it because they aren't exactly the finest reviews, lol. The first two were vague af because I didn't want to spoil anything. If you want to you can read them under my Jessica Jones tag, and I'll also be reblogging more gifs and shit when I finish the season. NGL, I'll probably do almost nothing but eat, sleep and watch Jessica Jones this weekend; I'm hoping I can finish it up.

Yeah, at least with Hannibal and Will there was mutual attraction and reciprocation of feelings (even if Will reaaaaally didn't want to for a long time). But Jessica just (very understandably) straight up loathes Kilgrave. It's a very, very different dynamic. I also really like fucked up pairings, but this one is Batman/Joker (my notp) levels of Do Not Want for me

Yeah, at least with Hannibal and Will there was mutual attraction and reciprocation of feelings (even if Will reaaaaally didn't want to for a long time).

That's very true. There's is a complex relationship even with all the abuse and the manipulation (even after Will realizes Hannibal has played him, and that Hannibal is the devil in disguise, he's still drawn to him, and he doesn't loathe him at least partially because he can understand him), and Kilgrave and Jessica seem to be much, much more straightforward. (He forced her to do terrible things, she is understandably hating him for it.)

Hannibal definitely manipulated Will into some unpleasant situations, and he did seem to almost...seduce Will over time, but it isn't quite the same thing as straight up controlling someone. (Will could fight, and did for a long time.)

Still fucked up, but yea.

Anyway, I won't judge anon for shipping it, but it isn't for me, I think.

Oh! Just wanted to add that I found the mention of Batman/Joker amusing. I've always been fascinated by Joker's feelings for Batman (particularly in the Arkham games verse) and do think there is some fucked up stuff there on HIS part, but I can't in a million years imagine it reciprocated.

Oh yeah, Joker definitely has a weird boner for Batman (the comics have had a lot of fun with this and the intensity of Joker's crush/hate-love has varied depending on the writer. It sometimes pretty clearly has sexual undertones and it's sometimes more subtle). Poor Batman.

I've seen a bit of that here and there and I really like it. It isn't so good for Batman and it's creepy as all fuck, but it adds another layer to that relationship.

It isn't that I don't get the appeal of an obsession like Kilgrave's on some level, but to that particular extent, with the addition of mind-control it just...takes it to a place I don't really want to follow.

Kilgrave is the worst. I hated him in the comics but Tennant and the show made him actually terrifiying.

with the (apparent?) rape

I hope the show follows the comics, where Kilgrave didn't rape Jessica during her captivity. Granted, in the comics it's even worse because he instead made her watch him rape other girls. I don't know if you've read Alias but in the comics I think that fucked her up even more than if he had raped her himself. (I mean, I don't want the last part to have happened, Jesus Fuck, give Jessica a break already, dammit. But that a man mindcontrolling a woman didn't use that to force her to have sex with him was sort of novel, I feel.)

I don't even know if shipping is the right word for it, lol. I definitely want to read all the fic that explores Kilgrave's twisted obsession with her after episode 7. (Look forward to episode 7. If you want to know just how insane and monstrous Kilgrave is, episode 7 is the one for you. It's a great episode, but I think that goes without saying.)

Thanks for the link, I'll check it out. And it's a good thing you'll be reblogging gifs; I can't navigate tumblr but I want aaaaall the Jessica Jones things, lol.

and the show made him actually terrifiying

IMO It's because he's obsessive and fucked up in a way that feels very true to life; it's uncomfortable watching him and Jessica for so many reasons, but one of them is that this seems like a relationship that could fit into the real world if you took out the whole superpower aspect. It changes things up a good bit, but still... the possessiveness, the abuse, the manipulation, the obsession, the, well, insanity and inability to back off even though she hates him, it's just awful. She's trapped.

But that a man mindcontrolling a woman didn't use that to force her to have sex with him was sort of novel, I feel.

That's true enough, although after seeing the show I def think he's capable of anything. He is the scummiest scumbag to ever scum. I think regardless of what happens, he rapes her, he rapes someone else and forces her to watch, it's going to be an acute torture that's going to haunt her. Poor Jessica, Christ.

Just reached episode 8 and...yea. If I wasn't officially freaked out before this point, I would be now. Kilgave is a freaky, disgusting human being who is batshit to the absolute max. Could things even get worse beyond this point? It seems impossible, but considering what a piece of shit Kilgrave is...probably.

Spoilers for episode 7 & 8, in case anyone else is reading this.

Also just watched episode 8, holy fuck. I think it was you who said in some comment that each episode you think Kilgrave can't get any worse, and then the next episode he does something even more terrible. I mean, episode 7 had him force a kid to slit his own throat for daring to say he was in love with Jessica. And making him kill himself in Jessica's own bed, Jesus Christ. And in 8 he's even worse? How do you even do that without becoming a ridiculously OTT villain?

That's true enough, although after seeing the show I def think he's capable of anything

Looks like the show went with him raping her in the physical sense as well as the mental. Damn, that whole convo was awful. Yeah, he had an awful childhood, but god, it's not as though that excuses him forcing people into complete servitude, raping people with zero remorse. He completely lacks even so much as a drop of empathy, and that's terrifying because people like that exist here in the real world, too.

Hahaaaaaa, yup, that was me. He just keeps reaching new, depraved depths. I mean, this is a guy who kidnapped, repeatedly raped and kept a girl (for...I can't even remember how long) then made her kill her parents IN THE VERY FIRST EPISODE. So I'm almost impressed at how the writers keep thinking of worse and worse things for him to do, because every episode feels like a new limit. (As for him being OTT, I think he's supposed to be OTT while still feeling realistic. He's like some random, crazy asshole IRL dialed up to 11.)

You were the anon I spoke to in today's thread too, right? I agree, he's basically as awful as they come. What I find frustrating about Kilgrave is he has that line about not knowing if people do things because he tells them to, or because they want to please him. ...Like, really? REALLY? You ask someone to shoot themselves or cut off their face and you think they're doing that because they want to please you? You know better then that, you gigantic asshole. (There was even a line earlier in the season about how good it was to have his powers of mind control.)

I guess what he means is in some situations like with Jessica, but (even if he wasn't in the wrong with Jessica, which he absolutely positively was) that would still leaves him treating everyone else in the world like disposable playthings easily discarded without a thought or care. He isn't capable of feeling sorry or empathetic, he's a psychopath.

If he REALLY wanted to be a good person, he would change his way of speaking, he wouldn't order everyone around; that's exactly what he wants, though. He isn't even interested in being a half decent person, he just wants what he wants regardless of how the other person feels about it.

Oh, and I've read your episode reviews so far! I like them, though I'm curious what you think of the cop guy by now. I liked him when he brought Trish that gun, but since then he has cracked IMO. The way he keeps insisting that Kilgrave needs to be killed even though he knows that an innocent girl will go to prison for the rest of her life if he does (does NY have the death penalty? Could hope get it for the murder of her parents?), and how he was even willing to kill the innocent staff in the house...

Wow, I didn't think anyone would read those, lol. It was taking me twice as long to get through an episode so after E5 I stopped writing out my thoughts. ...Then I ended up making a short post about how fucked up Kilgrave is after episode 7 anyway.

As for cop guy, I adored him in earlier episodes! Seriously, wanted him to be one of the big players in the show and was glad he was getting more screentime because he seemed like such a sweet person, but he's making me more and more nervous with every episode. I don't really know how to feel about him now.

Like, I do totally understand that Kilgrave is a massive threat that is almost unbeatable. It isn't hard to see that without a really good plan he'll probably find a way to escape and hurt countless other people. While I don't think killing is a great solution in most cases, I can certainly see why he wants Kilgrave dead.

On the other hand, for people like Hope and Jessica who have been so deeply affected by him, his survival is best. Of course Hope doesn't deserve to go to jail for the rest of her life, and definitely not get the death penalty for something she had no control over! But I don't think the cop is considering Hope, I think he's just looking at Kilgrave and thinking, "This guy needs to die so everyone else can live."

As for the staff, that bothered me too. I liked that he quickly went along with Jessica's, "Hey, there are innocents here, you can't," but he should've thought of that first. I think he's getting into that mindset of "If a few innocent people have to suffer to see that this monster is no longer with us, it's worth it in the end". I don't really like that way of thinking, but yea, he's looking at the big picture.

Which is odd because of course he was so thoughtful and sweet and concerned with every individual when he met Trish, but experiences like that change a person and he has not been changed for the better. I hope he realizes what kind of path he's going down, because it could lead to some bad things; I don't want that for him.
