Re: Doctor Who
(Anonymous) 2015-11-21 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)It was a touch of Return of the Living Dad from '96. A bit Thunderdome-y with absolute punishments and much busting the deal. And set in the Harry Potter Diagon Alley set. I liked how they used a lot of aliens, while still managing to keep the costs down by not having to use all the make up and effects. Hologram fields that fritzed a bit so you could see a still picture of the alien beneath the human hologram.
I loved the exceptionally and presciently timely exploration of mob justice, scapegoating in order to appease said mob, the mechanism of othering the stranger (if it isn't the new guy, then one of us did it and we don't want to admit that so we'll
focus on a fake Syrian passportignore exculpatory evidence, and of how paranoia can run rampant. Also the abuse of power for a leader's own goals and personal wishes when Ashildr abuses her position and uses the mob anger to try frame Rigsy to bait the Doctor. Clara's recklessness supposedly caught up with her when she took on Rigsy's death mark tattoo, but I don't think we can believe that for a microt. It was nice speech by Capaldi at the end, but Clara's was hammy as fuck and overlong. Moffat deffo back in Mary Sue avatar mode for that one.
Next week it is Missy and a touch of the perfect trap for the Doctor trope, again. Whether or not we'll find out how Clara dodged the raven shaped bullet next week or whether we'll have to wait for her appearance in the Christmas special, I don't know though.
I just wish I could remember who the hell Rigsy was. Like I say, turn in ten minutes late, tune out ten minutes early, and you've got a good episode.
