I felt the most recent season ended with them more on an equal footing. Bert is obviously a bit of a dilettante who struggles to keep focused on one enterprise, but Al has been learning to stand up to him and was pretty much an independent (but worried) adult son this season. Even though Bert is working with Al again on their distillery, he has Ruth running herd on him, and Al is more or less his equal in that now and not prepared to put up with any of the usual flannel.

On a separate note, I totally ship Ruth/Al even with the age difference. They were so sweet together.

nayrt - I like Al/Morwenna a lot more than Al/Pauline. Pauline was just... sort of bitchy? I get that Al wasn't always the best boyfriend, but geez, just dump him then.
