No. It was... So she could convince Frisk to stay... Because she didn't want Frisk OR Asgore to die.

and mettaton quite clearly says alphys instigated a fake conflict because she wanted to be apart of frisk's "story" and be a bit of a hero herself, for once. that's why you can't fail mettaton's segments, like the kitchen, or the firewall, or the bombs, because mettaton never truly intended to hurt you. it was just designed to make alphys look good.

it doesn't make sense if alphys is trying to convince frisk to stay by putting him in danger. but it does make sense from her general character arc of having lousy self esteem. alphys didn't want anyone to die, but she still manipulated things. they're not exactly contrary desires.

Do you really believe Mettaton, who, at the time, was doing things because it's implied Alphys wouldn't complete his desired body and the guy who's so stuck up on himself that he completely leaves behind any and all loved ones until he directly is confronted with how he inspires other people?

Yeah, Alphys was making herself look good. But, like, if she directly asked them to stay, they'd have no reason to? Whereas I always figured the hope was, that by befriending them and pointing out the stuff they'd overcome together, maybe it'd be fine if Frisk stayed.

yeah, I believe mettaton? he and alphys were friends and they both had something to gain from that arrangement. they're both flawed characters, but their friendship was sincere at the end of the day. besides, that's too major a plot point to lie about at that point in the game, and it neatly explains quite a bit.
