The wish-fulfillment thing is exactly what makes me hate it in most fic tbh. In canon it usually doesn't come across as wish-fulfillment, and is therefore way more enjoyable to me because I don't feel as much as if I'm watching some fan recording their embarrassing stupid emotional masturbation.

(Of course, there are some canon examples that come across as stupid wish-fulfillment emotional masturbation too, which I don't like. And I have read a couple of genuinely excellent fanfics with this trope not based on a canon storyline, but only a couple.)

I can understand that, but I guess in fic I can just read it and let it go. But if they do it wrong in canon it sort of ruins the character for me.

Eh, pretty much all fanfic is 'embarrassing stupid emotional masturbation' to some degree, or wish fulfillment.

It doesn't matter to me if writers fulfill a wish or not, I just want it to at least be convincing and well-written.
