Edgy Shows you watched when you were a teenager

(Anonymous) 2015-11-24 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
Were you were the type of teenager/pre-teen who went through that phase where you really wanted to watch shows that were "edgy" or "mature" or otherwise something that was "not for kids"?

If you were, what were the shows that you watched to fulfill this desire? Were they really grown-up shows? Violent and bloody shows? Do you laugh at yourself now or were the shows genuinely good?

Oz. And that was the first time I saw a penis (that I can recall). I was....13-ish maybe and I would watch it late at night when I was supposed to be asleep.

That awful MTV soap 'Undressed.' It seemed so scandalous to me.

I was a sheltered child.

When I was in Middle School, I was way into horror movies. I was not allowed to watch them, so I would sneak downstairs after my parents were asleep and find one on tv to watch. I'd also buy horror books that I would not have been allowed to buy if my parents know what they were about.

Most of it was fairly tame by today's standards.

Metalocalypse, The Venture Bros, Harvey Birdman, and several other Adult Swim shows. Those are the only ones that really stick out in my memory.

Upon rewatching, I found that The Venture Bros is the only one that holds up. Harvey Birdman was consistently mediocre and Metalocalypse was mostly terrible with smattering of good moments and some great music. I still love the music, but I have no intention of ever rewatching the show again.

I briefly tried to get into Family Guy and hated it. I like South Park, though.

Some anime, because they showed way more blood and graphic violence than the western superhero shows I had watched before. Dragon Ball Z and Inuyasha were a couple that stand out.

I didn't go through that phase because my parents never blocked anything, so I just watched whatever I wanted to on TV. I guess that made me kinda weird because when I had friends over, they would say stuff like, "Your parents let you watch Family Guy?! They're so cool!" And they'd sit there, completely enraptured by Peter making fart jokes, while I just wanted to watch Clifford.

Yeah, my parents never restricted anything, either, and even watched some shows with me (my whole family enjoyed "South Park", and I remember watching "Beavis and Butt-head" with my dad when I was a kid. And looking back at it now, "Ren & Stimpy" could qualify as pretty "edgy" for me, given how young I was when I watched that show.

So while I did watch some stuff that could be considered "edgy" as a teen/preteen (a lot of horror movies, someone else mentioned "Undressed" and I remember watching that here and there, stuff like that), it wasn't a regular thing for me 'cause a lot of the forbidden thrill was gone :p. I mostly wound up watching that stuff in the company of friends, or out of sheer curiosity. Otherwise I just watched a lot of sitcoms.

Same here, my mum didn't like things like Family Guy or South Park much but I could watch them if I wanted to, as a result those types of programs didn't often appeal to me because there was no 'forbidden' aspect to make them more inciting.

I was never allowed to watch it but any interest I had in watching it was gone when I secretly watched bits online and saw reviews of it.

Elfen Lied sticks out to me. I thought that was just the most shocking subversive thing back in the day.

The only thing I stand by is the opening is very nicely done. And you get an excellent sense for the town most of it takes place in, it feels like a real place.

I think the only show like that for me was Beavis and Butt-head. I think I was the only person who wanted to watch some "edgy"/"mature" cartoon in this area. Everyone else was all "I'M WATCHING JERRY SPRINGER BECAUSE LMAO SO MATURE".

I think because my grandparents watched it every day to mock the stupid bullshit that was going on and I found shit like Jerry Springer stupid as fuck?

My first edgy show was "Hill Street Blues" (yeah, I'm old...). My dad and I would watch it together, and I remember asking a lot of questions about what was happening. I think he had to give answers to some embarrassing questions...

Idk. The only thing I can think of is Kill Bill and to this day I don't know what was so horrible to warrant its rating. *shrug*

I'd get to watch things and review if my siblings were allowed to watch them. Man they were so mad when I said they probably shouldn't watch... Some movie about doing really stupid shit. Early 2000s.

To be fair my siblings are stupid and would have imitated it so i stand by that decision.

Well, it was Buffy. Which wasn't very edgy, but Joss Whedon claimed it was and we all blindly worshipped Whedon with an uncritical voice that Scientologists would kill to achieve within their own congregation. And evangelized in a way that no 19thC missionary to bong-bongo land could match. Thank L. Ron that the worst of the Whedonites have finally had the scales fall from their eyes.

I'd been allowed to watch some pretty R-rated stuff as a kid (Farscape, Sci-Fi channel movies, and disaster films).

However, when I was in my awkward teen years, I started getting back into anime. Death Note was this cool, edgy series with dark themes and mystery (... and hot yaoi). To this day, seeing cosplayers makes me vaguely embarrassed.
