2. the whole abuser thing was bullshit, as they provided plenty of evidence to discount that

I know them personally and I think this secret's blowing things a little out of proportion. I don't know what you're talking about with any sort of 'cult' or anything of that sort, but it seems like a serious reach.

2. In a one person's word against the other thing I'm more likely to believe the victim every time,

I'll bet the pronouns are a fairly recent change and OP sounds like they know about this person from some time ago. Not everyone keeps track of the gender issues of random people on the internet. So I'm pretty sure it wasn't intentional.
