Judging by the number of people who think you must be racist at worst and in need of examining (wherein you will surely want to change) your preferences at best if you don't ship the Psych guys...your fear does not seem unfounded.

That said, this isn't Jimmy Olsen, cub reporter, this is James Olsen, established adult. I think there's room for some change.

Oh christ why is it so hard for people to understand that trends are a thing and that sometimes they point to a larger cultural mindset or bias?

(Anonymous) 2015-11-27 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
Because the argument is almost never actually about trends, it's about "you're racist/sexist/homophobic if you don't like my preferred pairing/character specifically". People claim trends to obfuscate the fact that they're butthurt over other people not liking the things they like, but they don't actually bring any data to the table, let alone an analysis that takes into account anything beyond superficial similarities between ship dynamic or character archetype. If you're arguing bias, that's something you have to prove - and yes, as the person making the accusation, it's on you to prove it, not on other people to refute it.

nayrt

Nobody in either of the Psych threads DID say that you were racist if you didn't ship them. Everyone framed it as a question of a trend and a bias. I know because I was one of those people (and as it happens, by the way, I don't ship anyone on the show). Every single poster in the thread yesterday went out of their way to say that it was a question of statistical bias, not personal animus. And I don't want to check the thread in detail but that's also my recollection of the thread the day before last. Nobody fucking said what you say they said.

It is the case that Gus/Shawn was a tiny ship in Psych fandom - that's pretty much just true, everyone agrees. And I think it's a pattern that can be seen in several different fandoms. I frankly don't care enough to do a rigorous statistical analysis here, and if you want to dismiss me for that, fair enough. But it is sincerely the sense that I have - not out of any kind of partiality, just from what I've noticed.

It may be "framed as a question of trend and bias" but the underlying implication frequently seems to be "people who don't ship Shawn/Gus are exposing their 'trend' of being biased against black characters."

And the secret itself certainly didn't shy away from accusatory language.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-27 05:29 am (UTC)(link)
I can't speak to any implications. But only speaking personally, I would say that it's not a question of being biased against black characters. I do think it is - in some cases - because some people are less attracted to black people. At least in part because of the broadly racist ideas that are prevalent in society and culture.

If that's too accusatory, I'm sorry but I don't really know what to tell you. I don't think it makes anyone a bad person. But I am strongly convinced that it is true.

It's no coincidence though that it's only certain interracial pairings that people get incensed over, not the character in general not being shipped, but the fact that people not shipping one specific pairing makes you racist or have some kind of racial bias against black people(and only black people I'll add because fandom doesn't seem to give a shit about other PoC in this regard).

I've been in fandoms where I didn't ship a particular interracial pair but I shipped the black character with a few other characters, but nope I was still called racist because I didn't ship the interracial pair fandom decided was the 'proper' one to ship.

This is why I think the argument is nothing more than shipper butthurt.
