At what time in history has there not been a lot to feel bleak about? Star Trek came out of the 1960s, when the Vietnam War was raging and the constant threat of nuclear annihilation was hanging over everyone's head. I'd say that they had just as much if not more to feel bleak about as we do now, and yet...
