[Secret: I legit have a thirst for these two to become canon (more canon? For the sake of the secret I'm leaving out other iterations and focusing on the anime). I've always hated the whole "omg James is totally gay" shit in fandom because as a bisexual guy who is a little on the fem side, I hate people acting like how camp you are is the end-all-be-all of your sexuality. These two really care for one another and seeing them mature into themselves and their relationship would be amazing to me.

Oh, I hate that people insist that a feminine man must be gay. Gay men can be masculine, straight men can be feminine, and of course bi people exist. And people aren't quite as quick to insist that unfeminine women must be lesbians.

That's how I've always headcanoned James, OP. Bisexual, just a little on the "flashy" side. And I have always shipped him and Jessie. They just.. work for me.

Haha, I should've probably specified that as the kind of shipping where I was actively involved with a fandom and got into arguments about it and that kinda thing - more than just thinking "it'd be neat if they were a thing". Rocketshipping is more or less the entire reason why I'm here today.

That said, I think their entire dynamic could be perfectly seen as sibling-y, anyway - the childish bickering and all.

I don't think I even knew what fandom was at the time. When I did discover fandom, I was much older. I never even knew that Pokémon had its own fandom, only I was shown some fics I wish I could forget - if you know what I mean.

Thing is I wasn't the only one who assumed they were siblings. My little brother and my best friend believed it too. Then again, we were casual watchers.

Anyway, I hope they become canon!

The first fanfic I ever read was an in retrospective horrendously OOC rocketshippy V-Day fic that somehow involved Meowth killing Misty and Ash. I was thoroughly traumatised, and went back for more the next day.

I've turned fifteen years older since then, but there's still a part of me that gets a bit smug about them being married in the manga.

Nah, her fic was a lot more sophisticated than that. Her big problem wasn't really that her writing was bad - it'd go a long, long way if she'd kept it IC.

There's already a Pokemon manga where they're canon. There's even a pretty well known pic of them from it where Jessie is pregnant.

And I always figured James being gay was a joke with some fans because of the stereotypes and the place where I even I got that idea from played it off as a joke as well. It's a pretty old site, idk if it's even up anymore. The people who ran the site acted like sarcastic Pokemon loving jerks and I don't even think they took anything seriously. If anyone remembers, it was Pokemopolis.

The thing about James being gay was that it seems like at least 4Kids were in on it, too.

Sadly 4Kids did a really good Pokemon dub, and I remember them trying to counteract people thinking James was gay with him saying next he dresses as the guy, it was a later Kanto episode where he was dressed as the lead from Swan Lake and Jessie was dressed as the prince or whatever the character is.

Wow, they went on much longer than I thought.

I ship the hell out of them too, and I have since I was a kid! In my headcanon, I think James is bisexual. But he could also be gay with Jessie as his one exception, or he could be straight but simply enjoys crossdressing/presenting as feminine. I've also read headcanons/meta of James as genderfluid. IDGAF really about the label, as long as it doesn't get in the way of my Rocketshipping. :-P
