protests

I am so conflicted.

Because I understand and support protests on the name of Laquan McDonald, whose death by cop and info delay/apparent cover-up is a great injustice. And I understand that hindering black Friday shopping is a way to make people hear you. And I wouldn't be shopping Friday anyway.

But something about seeing protesters standing arm in arm and barricading stores while yelling at shoppers they assume don't know or are about the cause is enraging me.

Because all it does is annoy people who have just as much power as them to stop the government. Meaning none. They have no power. They are just people wanting to grab some deals on a day off. Which apparently black people don't do?

Re: protests

(Anonymous) 2015-11-28 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
I get that! It seems like common sense that pissing people off will just make strangers feel hostile towards you/your cause. IDK, wouldn't they rather have more people on their side?

Re: protests

(Anonymous) 2015-11-28 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
No. because Black Lives Matter is a terrible organization. Because there is no actual chain of command, it is a bunch of random groups doing shit. So they do stupid stuff like interrupt speeches of people ON THEIR SIDE. Or yelling at politicians who OFFER TO LET THEM SPEAK at the beginning of their rally. Or protesting murders of black people before they are actually investigated. So they protest people killed by other black people in random shootings or people who were justifiably killed by police (with video evidence).

IAWTC.

+1. They keep moving the goalposts and use any opportunity to yell nonsense that's not even related to the activity they're protesting. There's no point to it.

Well, you know, aside from yelling.

Re: protests

(Anonymous) 2015-11-28 05:11 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. They're actively alienating everyone who might have been willing to take a stand for greater police oversight. I've seen (and known) a whole lot of movers and shakers who were on board with BLM until they kept doing stupid shit.

The real problem though isn't that they keep shutting down highways or saying they're going to protest at big events, it's that statistics don't back what they're trying to say. Yeah, a lot of black people get shot up by the police, because an overwhelming majority of the violent crime in America is caused by black people. BLM is never going to gain a lot of traction because for every young kid who's denied justice, there's fifty assholes who got killed after they robbed a c-store and then tried to shoot the responding officers.

And rather than support things that actually HELP black communities and HELP black people get justice and support, they protest and spark riots and incite shit and then pretend they're the good guys when everyone gets understandably pissed off about having their city trashed and looted.

Re: protests

(Anonymous) 2015-11-28 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
I think they would like to get something done. And vague positive feelings are not much use in actually getting things done.

Re: protests

(Anonymous) 2015-11-28 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Is being deliberately antagonistic toward random people who have nothing to do with the issue really going to get anything done, though? I'd think that's usually just the best way to get people to stop listening.

Re: protests

(Anonymous) 2015-11-28 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Thi I a worthless protest anyway. The cop involved has been charged ithe murder. They're getting what they want.

Re: protests

(Anonymous) 2015-11-28 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
I think what they want is a system where it doesn't take a year for him to be charged. Where the city doesn't make a concerted effort to cover it up. Where the powers that be don't straightforwardly lie about the shooting.

Seriously.

When he is convicted of murder, perhaps. And serves the full term, no parole.

Re: protests

(Anonymous) 2015-11-28 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, they did that? Is that the guy who physically assaulted a woman and then tried to stop the paramedics from helping her? Why are most of the guys shot by cops scumbags? They're almost always some thug robbing someone or assaulting someone. Where's the outrage to the hundreds of other black on black victims that happen every month?

Re: protests

(Anonymous) 2015-11-28 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
It's a different violent thug that's in the news at the moment they're protesting for XD

I feel the same. Here in MN, the protestors shut down a major highway just at rush hour. People were stuck on the road for hours. Some thought there had been accident but it was just protestors. I was just thinking, what if an ambulance needed to get through?

Re: protests

(Anonymous) 2015-11-28 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
At the same time, it has to be said... I mean, if you want to have an effective protest, it needs to be noticed by people. It'd all be very nice I'm sure if no protest ever inconvenienced anyone - but then the police would keep shooting black kids and covering it up, which isn't really the ideal outcome.

Re: protests

(Anonymous) 2015-11-28 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
While that's true, I'm not sure getting noticed in a way that just pisses people off and makes them dislike you is the most effective strategy.

I am the 87%

(Anonymous) 2015-11-28 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
That doesn't commit over 50% of the violent crime in the US

Yeah, the tree lighting here in downtown Seattle-- which is a huge, family-oriented fun time-- was disrupted by BLM protesters for the second year. I'm sorry, but I'm hella running out of sympathy here. Yep, that's the way to swing people to your side-- make their kids cry, ruin a nice evening out most families don't get to have very often, try to break store windows and other shit, and randomly assault a cop and dislocate his shoulder! Fuuuuuuuck off.
