Are you saying OP is skeevy for the bpnus secret or that writing male-presenting characters as transwomen is skeevy? If the later, here's a reality check, payable now: Not all transwomen have the resources to transition. Not all transwomen feel comfortable with their ability to pass and choose not to transition for safety or anxiety reasons.

And those women deserve representation too, even if it's just in somebody's fanfic. Stop erasing them so you can beat your chest about "canonical women" which is just a tiny step away from "actual women." This is feminism done wrong.

You were going so strong, and then you lost it with those last two lines.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-28 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
which is just a tiny step away from "actual women."

No, it isn't.

Come back when you've learned how to logic.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-28 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
I think they were making fun of using the term 'canonical/actual women' when they used that. Which is why they used quotation marks

OP (of this sub-thread, not the secret)

(Anonymous) 2015-11-28 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, but here's the thing.

If you take a character who's canonically female, let's say, IDK, Emma from Once Upon a Time, and headcanon her as a trans woman; that does not make her any less of a "real" woman. If you interpret her as a trans woman, she is still a woman. She's a woman in canon, and if you write a fic where she is trans she's still a woman. Her being a woman does not change. Trans or cis, she's a woman either way.

However, if you write a fic where Emma is a trans man, then you're saying "This character who identifies as female in canon is not a real woman! I headcanon them as a man!"

And that bothers me, ESPECIALLY when it's done by the same people who love to scream about how Rule 63/genderbending is transphobic and evil.

Re: OP (of this sub-thread, not the secret)

(Anonymous) 2015-11-28 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
Because transmen aren't as deserving and underserved as transwomen? The fuck? And here I just I thought you were going off on some tangent about wanting transwoman headcanons to be based on characters created by cis women. But this is almost even more insidious.

Re: OP (of this sub-thread, not the secret)

(Anonymous) 2015-11-28 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think that's what they were saying. I think they were saying that taking a character who identifies as a woman and saying that she's really a man is misgendering the character.

Re: OP (of this sub-thread, not the secret)

(Anonymous) 2015-11-28 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
OP

Yes, exactly this.

Re: OP (of this sub-thread, not the secret)

(Anonymous) 2015-11-28 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
Then, what you're saying is you have a problem with trans headcanons. All you have to say.

Re: OP (of this sub-thread, not the secret)

SA
*Trans headcanons that are pre-transition. Fuck those people, I guess. Thwir stories don't matter.

Re: OP (of this sub-thread, not the secret)

(Anonymous) 2015-11-28 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
You really, really want to be offended tonight, don't you?

Re: OP (of this sub-thread, not the secret)

(Anonymous) 2015-11-28 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
Actually I don't; you just make it so easy with your incredibly offensive comments.

Re: OP (of this sub-thread, not the secret)

(Anonymous) 2015-11-28 04:57 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure saying it's bad to misgender people is offensive, but okay.

Re: OP (of this sub-thread, not the secret)

(Anonymous) 2015-11-28 06:04 am (UTC)(link)
You know they're not real people, right? I mean, damn. We can give tragic backstories, new jobs and different sexualities, but we sure as shit better not better not make a character pre-transition trans if it's not canon.

Re: OP (of this sub-thread, not the secret)

(Anonymous) 2015-11-28 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT

That is not at all the point I was trying to make, but I suspect you're being deliberately obtuse.

Re: OP (of this sub-thread, not the secret)

(Anonymous) 2015-11-28 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
That's a classic response for people who have no answer to an argument and can only feebly try to discredit the other person.

Re: OP (of this sub-thread, not the secret)

(Anonymous) 2015-11-28 05:02 am (UTC)(link)
lol

(Anonymous) 2015-11-28 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
How is it illogical? Anon wants transwomen in fic to be based on "canonical" women, which, let's be real in almost all cases means women who are played by AFAB women. Obviously it's not a 1:1 comparison, but there's room for implications to be inferred. Hence, "a step away." And either way, the comment still exposes an opinion that seems to say certain types of transwomen are skeevy while propping up those who are able to look teally feminine. And that's wrong.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-28 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah but just because it's an AFAB actress doesn't mean the character is AFAB. And also, a character who's canonically a woman is still canonically a woman if she's trans. Transwomen are real women.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-28 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah...I'm not sure where you got the impression I think transwomen aren't real women, but regardless, I mentioned above that I erred in my reading of the original comment.
