As I understand it, in the source material what he did to her was a lot weirder and more horrific than just rape.

He didn't actually have sex with her, did he? I think it was more like, he made her want to have sex with him so she would beg for it, then he denied her and made her watch him with other women.

So, even more cruel and violating, then.

That's true of the comic though I always wondered if it was an editorial mandate?? Anyway the way it was changed for the show made sense to me.

na

I always wondered if it was an editorial mandate?

I don't think so tbh. It's not like rape hasn't been used in the backstory of (many, many) female superheroes before. I think Bendis deliberately avoided having Kilgrave (well, Killgrave in the comics which is even more on the nose) physically rape Jessica because he wanted to show that violating her mind and forcing her to watch him rape other women was also severely psychologically traumatic. It added an interesting layer to Killgrave's fucked up obsession with Jessica

Yep, and I think that was actually worse for her than if he had raped her. I'm a bit disappointed with the show that Kilgrave physically raped her, but with the changes to his motiviations I can see why they did it. But still, I think the comics were novel in the regard that they went against the trope that the most horrific thing that can be done to a woman is rape.

Ugh tell me about it.

I'm honestly sick of rape being treated as just a "woman problem". I mean I know people give feminist explanations for it...but honestly it still feels so sexist to me.

They do bring up Kilgrave craving to force Jessica to want him then denying her sex again and again until she's basically devastated and suicidal, and frankly just that small scene where he contemplates it was enough to make me glad they didn't.

Obviously both are absolutely terrible, but I'm glad we didn't have to see any of that. (And that he didn't get a chance to do that to Jessica too. She'd been through enough.)
