Star Wars Expanded Universe novel recs

I'm thinking about picking up some of the EU novels, but I have no idea where to start. Can anyone give me recs about what would make for a good first couple novels?

Don't bother, they're no longer canon anyway. Just glorified professional trash fanfic.

I believe the Timothy Zahn ones are widely agreed to be the best. The first one would be... drat, I'm blanking... Checked: "Heir to the Empire", then "Dark Force Rising" and "The Last Command" make up the first trilogy, then there's "Spectre of the Past"/"Vision of the Future". I think the X-Wing books are also generally agreed to be good.

I really enjoyed many of the others when I was reading them in middle school, but I have not read them since and don't know how well they hold up.

Agreed on the Thrawn trilogy.

Crystal Star gets a lot of flak iirc, and certainly has some issues but I love it for all the Luke/Han friendship feels.

I also enjoy The Corellian Trilogy and The Courtship of Princess Leia (chronologically the first of the above). One thing to keep in mind though is that some of the books had been around for a little bit before the decision to make everything connected was born, so you might notice some discrepancies in things like Luke's abilities or new characters' appearances.

Second the rec of Zahns novels, and the x-wing series by stackpole and Allston is also quite good. There's a lot of uneven stuff otherwise but most books have some good stuff in them! Also consider the comics, the Tales graphic novels I enjoyed quite a lot, a void variety of stories :)
