I think people mainly bring up Shawn/Lassiter to prove their point that fandom ignoring Shawn/Gus has a race element too it. And it's true that there is a race element to the problem but I agree that it's weird when people act like Shawn/Lassiter wouldn't be big because of their dynamic.

In later seasons the show even baited that pairing a bit. I never shipped anyone on the show (preferred the friendships) but I could see the reasoning behind a lot of the ships.
