(Anonymous) 2015-11-29 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)Well, to be fair generally shoujo manga is definitely more on the "girly" (? I don't know if that's the right word...feminine?) side. Banana Fish was made a looooong time ago, before the genres staple tropes had really stabilized, and part of what pushed them into labeling it as a "shoujo" manga was because of the BL elements in it. If it were made today it would be a gritty shounen title, even with the BL elements. In fact, fans of shoujo manga weren't too happy in Japan lol, since they picked up Banana Fish expecting typical shoujo and got dark and angsty grit and rape and gang violence instead.
This is also a popular series among guys which surprised me (I mean, I'm a guy too but I'm also bisexual and I love when there is a gay or lesbian couple in mangas), both in Japan and in the West. It surprised me when I picked up a volume at the comic book store and immediately the cashier and three other guys immediately wanted to talk about it lol, "ohhh Banana Fish yeah man that series is fucked up, I mean it's great but holy shit, poor Ash". It was kind of interesting to see a guy in the middle of buying a cast-off figure of Rei Ayanami fanboying like hell about a series that's known chiefly for male-on-male rape and the delicate romantic connection that borders on sexual between Ash and Eiji. :P

BTW, I don't know if you're looking for recs (and you probably already know these), but as I recall this author's BF fics are very good:

(The only one I know I read was All Hallow's Eve (and I see I even reviewed it back in the day, 12 years ago). It was memorable enough that I remembered the author's name all this time.
