I think more people would have shipped Gus/Shawn if he were white, but you're right that Shawn and Lassie had a lot of ship fodder (especially in the first couple of seasons) and I think that the people who accuse the ship of being random are either deliberately ignoring that or they haven't actually seen the show and just like getting involved any kind of drama where they can self-righteously accuse people of being racist. I was definitely more of a Shawn/Lassie and Gus/Jules person. I thought Gus and Jules were really cute together and, to be perfectly honest, I didn't think either of them deserved be inflicted with Shawn as a romantic partner. I love the guy, but he's kind of a nightmare tbh. At least with Shawn/Lassie, they can bug the crap out of each other without one person bearing the brunt of it

I'm a Shawn/Gus person, I don't think Lassiter/Shawn is random at all, but I do agree with the other anons that racism plays a big part in this. If Gus were white people would be all other that shit precisely because of how close those two are. People love a woobie, and the fact that Gus is basically Shawn's keeper would appeal to people. It appealed to the Shawn/Gus shippers who don't care about race, like half of the Shawn/Gus fic out there is introspective stuff regarding how Gus feels about Shawn's Manic Pixie Dream Boy attitude towards life.

Personally I kind of shipped Lassiter/Jules. There were a few hints (he smelled her goddamn hair lol) and I thought it could have been interesting, since Lassiter is pretty married to the job, having someone who shared that part of his life with him would be neat to see.

For me, Shawn and Lassiter were just too...adversarial I guess. There comes a point for me when two characters pass the "cute" rival status and go straight into "Yeah, I think they'd spend more time broken up and on the outs for really stupid reasons" kind of territory. I just picture Lassiter having a hair trigger if he were even to attempt to date Shawn, and I could picture them breaking up like 5 times a day, which Shawn might think isn't serious but Lassiter would...I dunno. I'll freely admit it's definitely not my favourite dynamic precisely because it's so adversarial. I can see the above sentences totally being someone else's cup of tea though and I'm not judging, I just wish people would stop acting like Shawn/Gus is in a vacuum where racism doesn't affect what people ship.

I agree that more people would have shipped Gus/Shawn if Gus were white; I apologize if I didn't make that clearer. I mostly just get annoyed when people accuse Shawn/Lassiter of being completely baseless. I mean, it doesn't detract from their point about racism playing a role in shipping to admit that Shawn/Lassiter also has a solid foundation ship-wise.
