Yep, there is nothing wrong with turning fandom into another gated community.

Your reasoning is shaky at best. No one person can turn fandom into a gated community. Not even dozens and dozens of people can do that, because you and others who believe fandom should be open have the ability to do that. Nobody is obligated to enter the "gated" portions, just like nobody is obligated to be anyone's patron. When you propose that fandom as a whole should be open and free to everyone, you're imposing your beliefs on everyone else. If someone wants to use Patreon for their work, it's their right entirely.
