Somehow a raccoon got in the house and I don't know when. Maybe before the cold front came in Thursday? But I only heard it running around today. And I haven't gotten it back outside yet. Argh.

Oh, fun.

We have a mouse chilling inside our stove, mostly inside the burners. We're planning on getting a new stove, but we need an exterminator to come and investigate the mouse situation, too (so we can make sure he doesn't get into said new stove whenever we get it). But they're kind of pricey, so...yeah. Trying to sort that out.

NAYRT, and I'm glad, because cute as they are, raccoons are destructive little shits. But when we got mice in our stove, I used to plop our cat on the kitchen counter next to the stove and pet him until he settled down to doze. It took awhile, but one day the cat noticed something--noise, smell, whatever--and started paying really close attention to the stove without my coaxing him up there. Shortly after, the mice were gone (finding random tails and feet and skulls for a couple weeks after was gross but eh.) So do you have a cat or can you borrow a mouser from anyone? Good luck with your unwanted houseguests either way.

nayrt

Gory mouse parts are meant to show you that they care!

but just to amplify this advice, make sure you get an experienced mouser. Based on the professional way my cat slaughtered his catnip mice when he was just a tiny thing, I'd have thought he was born knowing how to mouse. (He came from barn cats, after all.) But he made a terrible job of his first real mice. And he looked ever so serious and attentive, crouching down on the basement steps...but he alternated that with marching up and down yowling, as if to announce that William The Bloody, The Living Death Of Vermin, was on the prowl, and the mice should lock up their daughters. It took him quite a while to get the hang of it.

We do have a cat, yes! She's the one who sniffed out we had a mouse in there well before I ever saw it-she did the whole "staring at the stove" thing, too. My mom has yet to see the mouse, though-she's very wary whenever she goes into the kitchen, 'cause she's absolutely terrified of mice. I'm not happy one's in our stove, no, but I'm not scared of them like she is.

We've got a couple mouse traps set up there, though, 'cause my mom's REALLY not keen on our cat attacking the mouse and finding guts all over to clean up afterward (plus, we live in an apartment, so we don't really want to have that mess in a place we don't own, even though we'd clean it up). But if our cat does happen to catch it and get rid of it, hey, I won't complain.

nayrt, but have you got your staples in mouse proof containers? It's depressing to take a box of oatmeal or something off the shelf, only to discover that the corners of the box that were out of sight have been gnawed out and oatmeal (mixed with disgusting little mouse shits) is spilling everywhere. I like those bail-top glass jars--they can't even smell the contents then.
