I wish the frustrations I found were stuff that consulting a guide could help with. The awkward UI making combat, trading, and interacting with the environment harder than they needed to be, and a bug (that uninstalling and reinstalling wouldn't eliminate) removing the non-violent (read: "viable for the build I was trying to play") options for rescuing Tandi that I knew from consulting a walkthru were supposed to exist (and not even having the option of using console commands to work around the bug) - that stuff would remain a pain in the ass.

Can't really help you with the UI, as that takes some getting used to (FO1's is worse) but there's a number of fan patches for both games to fox bugs and generally improve the games.

Like, I'm not trying to push the game on you or anything, just saying. The TeamX patches even make FO1's companions much less of a pain in the ass.

No worries. You're a fan, I'm not, both are valid positions.

I've given it enough tries at this point to be pretty certain I won't find it fun, and, as a counterpart to this comment, I've been worrying about my explanation of my issues with it have come across as dumping on it.

(It took three tries to figure out a build that could get me to Shady Sands alive, alone.)

Yeah, I'm not sure you should be having that much trouble getting to the first town, as when I first played I'd had no experience with this type of game at all (wasn't allowed to play them 'cuz mom thought all RPGs were D&D and therefore works of Satan so I had to smuggle it in) and I got to Shady Sands okay. That was 15 years ago when I was a much shittier gamer. So either something's wrong, or you've had catastrophically bad luck.

If you give it another go, use the fan-patch. The standard is TeamX, but they're not cumulative so they require multiple manual installations, which can be a pain. FIXT consolidates them as well as adds further updates, but I found it to be a bit unstable.

Also turn down the difficulty, I guarantee you it'll make FO1 a cakewalk.

And really there's only one build you'll ever need unless you're trying to be fancy and do an all-melee run, but that's for crazy people.
