fandom-stocking question

(Anonymous) 2015-12-03 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
So, I'm considering signing up for this. Has anyone else done this? What's your experience been?

Any advice? (How many fandoms/ships should I add? Or how many is too many? How specific should I be with likes? Any off-the-wall things you'd like to gift that's not a fandom or ship that I should think about adding to my list? What should I expect when trying to treat someone? How exactly does the gifting part work? Etc.)

I know that there are people who do this every year, and give and get good things, so I think you should give it a try.

My own experience was very disappointing. I made various gifts for 8 people (fics and icon sets) but only one of the 8 acknowledged their gift in any way. (On top of that, if the mods hadn't googled some fanart from one of the fandoms I requested and slapped down a resized "icon" at the last minute I would have had an entirely empty stocking. I am grateful to the mods for tyring, but, for me, I said Never Again.)

Yeah, I'm hearing a lot of those kinds of stories. I have a lot of fandoms I could ask for, some big, some tiny. My tiniest fandoms are fandoms of one and I would expect anyone who gifted in them would just read the wiki, so it would be ATG fic. But I can point people to the canon and I'd love to get art, banners, icons for them since there's so little. And if someone made a fanvid, I'd probably wet myself with glee.

But I would like fic too, so I'm thinking I should ask for more popular stuff? I'm just really trying to put my expectations in the appropriate place since that messed up my first Yuletide. And I want to know what kind of thank you's I'll be expected to give since responding to comments is a little stressful for me. I never know what to say.

I think just saying thank you and mentioning one thing that you liked is enough. (and hey if you don't like it, you can at least say "thank you the time for making a gift for me."

I did it in 2008 and 2009. My experience was pretty favorable, but LJ was much more active back then. I did it because I had a friends list that was quite active in the Classic Who fandom, and they posted about it. So if I participated, I knew there was a chance I'd get a few fills from my friends. And I did! Mostly comment ficlets, and a handful of icons. Nothing long at all.

I did small drawings (examples here). Just pencil sketches, but they were pretty well-received.

I don't know what it's like these days, I'm afraid. I just do the F!S Secret Santa. Still drawings, but more detail and full color.

I've had so much fun with this exchange, and I'd urge you to participate. Last year, I did seven different things and got gracious thank-yous for all of them. I don't really care for the generic holiday greetings graphics, personally, but you can opt out of those and no one will be offended.

As for what fandoms to request, I'd try to have at least one big/popular one in your list. I've done a few years where I had some obscure stuff and no one matched me on that. This year, I'm wiser, so I've request both big and small stuff.

The gifting part is all in the comments, which are screened until the reveal day.

Hope to see you there!

I tend to be pretty general with the links and pretty specific with the dislikes. Because one year I had someone gift me with things I really didn't like (I though I'd mentioned them but I guess I wasn't specific enough).

If your stuck for something, there are a lot who do sign up who put that a simple season's greetings are welcome (and as one who has recieved those, I can certainly assure that is the case with me).
