38. I think that people tend to hate Shinji because they want to believe they're braver than him, but they can't admit they probably wouldn't be, especially at his age.

68. I must try this sometime.

38. I'm not the OP, but I think what you said there is entirely true. I never thought about the Shinji-hate in depth, I remember getting annoyed with my friends who all seemed to really hate Shinji. You're totally right, people want the protagonist to be someone super kick-ass they can pretend to be, rather than anything like a real person.

There are some 14-year-olds who could manage to pull it together and save the world with a brave face. However, that was not the story that Anno wished to tell. He wanted the protagonist to be different than Gundam, for instance, more delicate. I think that was plenty legitimate to explore, not only what it did to Shinji and Asuka (and Rei and Touji to a lesser extent), but the adults who would be willing (and are perhaps, in their own way, forced) to put kids in harm's way for the sake of others. Those questions don't get raised if it's something the kid wants to do.

Evangelion explored a lot of themes that were not often explored in such a mainstream setting. Instead of just yay cheesecake, yay mecha, yay giant aliens, it raised a lot of questions about the character and morals of everyone involved, as well as the ethics of battling the Evas. Is it okay to ask someone to sacrifice their own lives and arguably their own humanity for the sake of the rest of the world? Is it okay to let that person walk away if it means the world ends? Whether or not this was enjoyable to witness is a personal opinion, but I think it was good to raise those questions.

Shinji is a wuss, but hell, he's not a real person. I can't understand the vehemence. In reality, he is too fine a mirror on the young, teenage nerd. The types of people who say they would do differently and go out the save the world, I'm not sure I believe them. After all, aren't they sitting typing at their computers and watching anime, already convinced of their own ineffectiveness, instead of going outside their little bubble ("What's wrong with running from reality if it sucks?") and meeting the things that they fear most?

I can't hate Shinji. I used to empathize with him. I'm an adult now, so I identify myself more with other characters now, but I think that people who hate Shinji merely hate their own weakness.

tl;dr - Yeah I liked Eva too, I thought it raised good questions. People who hate on Shinji resemble him more than they'd like to admit.

Exactly, that's what I think. Shinji's problems are things normal teens have, only amplified by the situation he's forced into. Not all anime fans are like this, but there's plenty of "otaku" who are anti-social, insecure, want to run away from the world...it's interesting (and a little sad) that people hate on characters that reflect this.
