"Oh it's okay if I get pregnant, I can just give it up for adoption!"

I almost never hear that. I hear "If I get pregnant, I can always terminate." How is that better? It's horrifying - at least in planning an adoption, one is actually accepting the reason they're not ready for an adult relationship in the first place, but termination, they think, just wipes the slate clean! Not true at all.

That said, the movie isn't really a comedy, you're right. It has it's funny moments, but it has moments where it is truly bitter. But one could not make a truly funny movie about a topic that's really not very funny at all.

Oh it's not any better. I really don't like either excuse myself, but what can you do? I think I hear the adoption one more, personally, and hear people who think that it's okay, that they won't have to deal with repercussions of it, either. (I hear the movie has something addressing this; however, I had to leave the theatre part way though.)

It's so hard to say. I just don't like the message it ends up sending, that it's okay, because there will be a yuppie couple to give your baby. I dunno.

But yeah. The "comedy" billing that they advertised was what irked me the most. For me, it made the whole thing seem disrespectful, but I'm probably just uptight. XD And sorry for the essay...I tend to get long winded when talking about anything.

Well, there is a moment when everything is not so certain about the future of Juno's baby. And she and her boyfriend do suffer some for giving their child up in the end. It's not without repercussions. The movie is really about making the best situation out of something that is staggeringly life-altering. Right after Juno gives birth, her father is stroking her hair and says, "One day, you'll be back here, on your own terms." It's a very beautiful and sad scene. There is pain and loss, but also the acknowledgment that it is really for the best.

I think what struck me the most about Juno was her relationship with her stepmother. Juno's been abandoned by her own mother, nearly treated like she doesn't exist. This would naturally effect any intimacy issues she might have with her own children. But Bren doggedly defends and shelters and protects Juno, and obviously loves her a great deal. It's very touching.

Ah, see, the whole part with the step mom...I found the whole thing kind of forced. ^^; I'd disagree that her step mother's treatment would necessarily have any affect on her ability to raise a child-- life's what you make of it, and many people have suffered parents a lot worse, but gone on to be great parents themselves. Regardless, the whole step mother part felt like it was shoved in to try to build sympathy and not well thought out, but that's another matter altogether, and doesn't really matter what the plot of the movie is. That's more a script/acting thing.

Like I said, the fact that they billed it as a comedy was what ruined any attempt at making it seem like a serious movie for me.
