Haven't seen series six yet, but as Matthew seemed genuinely happy as he rode off into the sunrise, I'm going say you're projecting your bias into the character.

1)Marriage is not punishment. If it is, you are doing it wrong.

2)I'm not familiar with the show, but it takes two to be married. Does her fiance also deserve an unhappy marriage?

"I'm not familiar with the show or the characters, but here are my very valuable .02 anyway!"

Didn't answer my question. Does Henry Talbot deserve an unhappy marriage?

(Anonymous) 2015-12-05 03:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, he deserves it for being a dead bore.

I haven't seen past the first half of season four, but isn't this a bit harsh? I was hardly a fan of the character either (team Edith) but a lifetime of unhappiness? Really? How much worse did she get in season 5?

(Anonymous) 2015-12-05 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Mary continues to be a bitch to Edith, whereas Edith has life changing things happen, leading her to mature, mellow and become a nicer woman. So Mary basically continues to be scathing to a sister who has long since stopped responding in kind, and has moved on, and then ruins her life in the season 6 finale. Mary gets a lot of hate for what she does in that episode.

THIS. Edith calling her a jealous, scheming bitch was on point, and something that should have happened a LOT sooner.

Team Edith, FTW!

I've seen all of the new season except for the Xmas episode/series finale. Can't wait!

I will always be team Mary solely because she's Death's granddaughter. I don't care what she does. I'm rooting for her.

Good one! And yes, it's that time of year again!

I can't stand Mary either, but honestly, this is a bit much- for one thing, Matthew was genuinely happy with her, plus he'd just met his son. No way he killed himself. Plus Mary was a much better person with him, or at least tolerable. I was starting to actually like her before he died and everything went to shit.

Also Henry isn't that bad, god. I don't really see the whole "he's perfect for her" thing that everybody else keeps going on about, but this secret makes it sound a lot worse than it is.

Eh. She's not a favorite, but she's trying, at least, finally, to see things from other people's perspective. And I'm totally Team Edith, but I think everyone pushing the race car driver on her is being insensitive - she had a panic attack during the race and nearly collapsed and nobody seems to think her distress is real.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-05 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I hated her character from the very beginning. It's one of the reasons why I was never able to get into that show.

(I haven't seen the most recent season yet, I watch it on Masterpiece with my mom.) Maybe it's because I kind of identify with the pressures of being the eldest, but I've always liked Mary (I loved Sybil, but love is a lie and I am always hurt). I'd been lowkey rooting for her and Tom, but I figured Mary would have to marry someone else after Tom (broke my heart) left for America with Sibby.

lmao I won't argue that she can be a terrible person but Matthew was clearly very much in love with her. There's no way he kills himself immediately after their son is born. I don't think it's realistic to stretch your interpretation that far.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-05 03:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I think you're stretching it to say that he killed himself over her hatefulness, but I do agree with your central point: that she's hateful, dull, and deserving of every unhappiness.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-05 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Which will never happen because she's the writer's favourite.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-06 07:56 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe because I was never Team Edith or anyone really I didn't mind Mary. She could definitely be mean, but I also thought Edith could be kind of an arsehole when she put her mind to it too. The only one who wasn't that way was Sybil, who I genuinely did like.
