I always read it the other way around, honestly; them being abusive, with him being a victim/enabler.

Same here. I never got any indication that he was abusing Regan or Goneril, more that they were waiting for their chance to take the power and wealth that they wanted and once they got their hands on it, they had no more use for Lear. Calculating and power-hungry and willing to get their hands dirty is how I see them, not poor woobies desperately fighting back against abuse. And honestly I find them a lot more compelling characters that way. If you want a poor woobie, try Cordelia.
