I used to enthusiastically rec stories I'd never actually read to gain fandom popularity... and it worked.

Except one time it kind of backfired when a BNF author thought I'd copied aspects of their fic, and I couldn't explain how that was impossible because I'd never read it. I had to laugh it off as 'being inspired' by the fic instead :\

When it is clear the author is hardcore self-inserting (especially common in RPG fandoms like Mass Effect), I often feel kind of uncomfortable reading even the really well-written ones, because I feel like I am looking in on someone's private fantasy. I know, I know, they were the ones who posted their fantasies online, and it's not like all other fic isn't someone's fantasy, but author avatar type fics just make this obvious to me.
