There's a fanfic I desperately want to write, but it's a longfic, centered on a ridiculously minor character, and mostly gen, the only pairing being straight-up incest with a much more popular character. I think it could be a great story, but the fandom is small and somewhat closed-ranks at this point, and I'm honestly not sure if it would go over well at all.

Write it anyway, upload it on a pseud or something if you're afraid of blowback. But if you're going to love writing it, write it.

Ooh, I hadn't considered the pseudonym. That's not too bad an idea... I would definitely enjoy writing it. I just worry I would become discouraged in continuing it if the first few chapters got a lot of blowback.

Oh! I did a... curiously similar thing in a fandom I was in many years ago. It worked out for me quite well, but honestly I wasn't expecting it. It was seriously just a vanity project.

Oh, that's heartening to hear! I'm definitely playing out worst-case scenarios, I admit.

I used to love this one fanfic writer in another fandom--until I started interacting with her and her clique in an RP.

It made me see how horribly OOC she actually wrote a character, even if that character was a minor character. She turned an otherwise awesome character into a shrinking violet woobie who just didn't seem like his canon self at all.

The sad part is? I'm glad I've never turned back to reading any of her fics in any fandom because I know she'll try to latch to a canon and twist them so OOC.

I'm doing something like that (minus the incest) and although it'll never be one of the most popular stories in the fandom, I have got well thought positive reviews and several faithful readers so all in all, I'm happy I decided to write that fic.

Haha, honestly, it's probably the incest part that's going to put me in the fire. The character involved is one of the most popular in the fandom, and the ship is...nonexistent, as far as I can tell? I could take the ship out, but honestly it's pretty crucial to the development of the story and characters, so I can't really get around it...

If it helps, the pairing I included is also nonexistent and it breaks the fandom's favorite ship. I was expecting a backslash for that, but it was the opposite.
Of course, not all fandoms are the same, but I think it's worth the risk (plus there are many fandoms that are ok with incest)

do it, anon. I'm writing a stupidly long gen fic in a relatively small fandom where all the slash is FTB...and despite my thoughts that no one would ever even read it once, let alone follow, it's 10x more popular than the PWPs I write for bigger, slashier fandoms. you never know!

I've done similar (right down to the incest, woops) and it was well received by the scattering of people still around. I used a psuedo (all my fics are psuedoaccounts tbh) and everynow and then I get comments or reviews.
