(Anonymous) 2015-12-05 12:12 am (UTC)(link)After a lengthy break from fandom, I came back and attempted to read a new story she'd written for a fandom I was actually in -- and realized that her writing is actually super OOC. She has a strong writer's voice that I still enjoy, but I'm better off reading her fics for fandoms I don't recognize.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-05 12:31 am (UTC)(link)But, even if I did, I don't think I would have liked the fic, because it wasn't really "Zutara" it was "fannon-Draco-Malfoy/Loki-in-Zuko-skin"/Katara. All haughty glances and noble carriage, and nothing of the dorky hot-headed character I had grown to appreciate in the show.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-05 12:43 am (UTC)(link)I honestly think that a lot of BNFs have this problem; their own writer's voice overshadows the characters' voices.
Re: rageprufrock
(Anonymous) 2015-12-05 01:04 am (UTC)(link)Seriously, if I'm writing a story and the readers feel my voice is overshadowing that of the characters, I REALLY want them to tell me. I always consider it the highest compliment if a reader tells me my characterization was spot on in a story.
Re: rageprufrock
(Anonymous) 2015-12-05 01:38 am (UTC)(link)So maybe she's just not as good at writing in character for one fandom as she is in some others?
Or maybe it's a subjectivity issue. Perhaps if I were to read the fic you find OOC, I would find it in character. How we perceive characterization is a pretty subjective thing.
But the most likely one of all is that rageprufrock was being deliberately OOC - i.e. going with a headcanon/fanon interpretation of the characters rather than a strictly canon interpretation.
Re: rageprufrock
(Anonymous) 2015-12-05 01:50 am (UTC)(link)It's probably this. rageprufrock is all about the witty snark, in both narration and dialogue, and it's great to read which is why I've followed her for almost a decade now. Sherlock, afaik, has a lot of snarky bantering between the leads, so it plays well into her writer's voice. But other characters in other canons aren't like that, or at least aren't like that to the extent that they seem to be in her fics. So it becomes very obvious after awhile that this is the author talking to the reader, not the character.
Re: rageprufrock
(Anonymous) 2015-12-05 01:54 am (UTC)(link)As I remember it, some people in the Stargate fandom had set up a sort of book club, only with fanfic, where they would discuss a big novel-length fic every couple of weeks. One of rageprufrock's fics was a selection...and she made a big stink because it was done without her permission and critical comments were made and she felt ~violated.
