I think astolat is an awful fanfic writer. Her characters never ring true to me. Prose wise she's very good (and if I could remember the publishes under I would probably enjoy reading her books), but as a fanfic writer I think it's important to write the canon characters IC. Like another anon above said about rageprufrock: her writer voice just shines through.

(I have the same problem with rageprufrock, actually. I enjoy their AU fic, but there's always something wrong about their canon fic IMO.)

The last fic of hers I read was... probably something Thorki? I don't remember if I was turned off by the characterizations, but I do remember some Loki bias. (Then again I have yet to read a fic in that fandom that wasn't Loki-biased...)

That's kind of funny because I haven't found much Thor fic I've liked, but she has one in particular that I love. (It's dub-con, and Loki is far from a sweet, misunderstood prankster. However, I believe you on the bias thing. It's everywhere in Thor fandom.)

I don't think woobie!Loki is astolat's particular brand of bias, but I think she presents him as being more cunning and capable than he actually is in canon. Sometimes. Still one of the better writers in the fandom, though.

That's probably true, though I have a feeling many writers do that kind of thing, no matter the fandom. I understand how it could be irritating to some, but in this case I guess it didn't bother me. (However, I haven't read all her Thorki fic, so I'm not sure all of it is good. The ones heavily centered on Loki don't interest me as much.)

You're looking for the Temeraire books, published as Naomi Novik.

See, and while I haven't read any of her work for other fandoms, her Thorki work is imo some of the best characterized Thorki on Ao3. (It's not MCU so much as a clever blend of movie personality and comicbook personality.)

I haven't read enough of her work to really be able to give an opinion, but she does have two short, extremely popular Sherlock fics that just left me thinking, "Well, that was incredibly boring."

With the small amount of her writing that I have read, it's just felt as if there was something missing. I'm not exactly sure what, but I think it's something on the emotional level - something that would summon an emotional response to whatever's happening, rather than leaving it feeling flat and bland. Just my impression.
