ozaline: Ozma from Skottie Young and Eric Shanower's Ozma of Oz comic adaptation (Ozma)

As a huge fan of Oz I have to say I think this might be my favourite adaptation (at least as far as English Language ones that are available on video), the music was as good as MGM over-all, and in many ways felt truer to the novel. I have some friends who are disappointed that there are songs cut from the Broadway score (or replaced as in "I was born the day before yesterday," with "you can't win").

So You're not alone in thinking this has a quality that a lot of other adaptations lack.

I don't hate most of the other adaptations though, and I do like MGM's for what it is.

Is there a non-English adaptation you enjoy?

A few yeah, there's a really good Russian cartoon that combines elements of Volkov's magic land with an adaptation of the first two Baum books, and I have seen really good Japanese, and Israeli stage adaptations. There's also a really outlandish Polish Oz cartoon series.

I really like when people look at the rest of the books, but I've found a lot of non American adaptations are willing to more readily break the MGM mold (though there's still MGM influence to be found). I think what I like about the Wiz is the same thing I like about those foreign adaptations, it isn't too much in MGM's shadow (there's bits there like the farmhands at the start of the production, but overall it does it's own thing).

You just needed to ease on down the road.

Don't you carry nothing that might be a load, OP.

Kinda sad I missed this one. The Scarecrow looks pretty cool and I adore Queen Latifah.

Yeah, I heard a lot of really good things about this and it makes me wish I'd caught it, too. If it ever gets reaired or when it gets released on DVD or something, I'll make a note to check it out.

It's on Hulu, I believe, and it's being rerun on the 18th!

DVD is out on the 22nd, as well and if you're in Canada you can stream it from CityTV's website.

Ah man, I considered watching this but forgot. TBH I haven't seen any of these live musicals, but I was willing to give it a chance.

I loved SyFy's Tin Man, but that wasn't a musical.

Tin Man was so surprisingly good! Ridiculously cheesy, yet awesome. The ending was pretty obviously angling to be the beginning to a TV series, and I will always be sad that that didn't happen.

It definitely set itself up in a way that SyFy could've continued it and I held out hope they would for a while because it seemed to be well received, but...yea, that didn't happen.

It was really fun! Kind of silly, yes, but in a good way. It had charm. The changes were pretty cool, too. (Plus...uh, I shipped Cain/Glitch. I know, I know...)

AYRT

(I shipped it too; no judgment here!)

Haha, it's predictable as fuck of me but I couldn't help it. That "Sweetheart" comment (and the general bickering and flirtation) got to me.

And now I really want to watch this again. Noooooooooo.

Tin Man sounds pretty good. I'm a huge Oz books fan and I love that so many creators are running with the original material (except for Wicked which I really disliked). I want to see Return to Oz as well, it looks awesomely weird!

Whoa, I don't remember Return to Oz existing! I'll have to google it.

Tin Man is definitely a bit different, it's no straight-up adaption (though too many of those would be boring), but I enjoyed it a lot. It was charming and an easy watch. I'd say give it a shot.

Return to Oz is based (mostly) on Ozma of Oz, the third book in the series. Here, have a nightmare ;) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WM0RFE3QGAU

That is...not what I expected, wow. (And yes, pretty nightmarish and bizarre.)

Reminds me of something out of a Mad Max film. (I haven't even seen them, mind, but that's where my mind went.)

I liked a lot of the various adaptations but I think this was my favorite. Also I'm glad that NBC finally put on a good live show, the last 2 were shit.
