Anyone remember the Law and Order SVU Mushroom Samba episode? The one about the mushroom poison thing where Olivia pretends to be (or is I can't remember) high at one point.

That episode annoyed the shit out of me. The way the grandmother treated the granddaughter from the very beginning. She told her granddaughter not to air her 'dirty laundry' when the granddaughter describes the loss of her parents and what that caused her. because being traumatized after your parents died when you're a child is something to be ashamed of. She went on and on about how the victim was the daughter she would have loved to have right in front of her granddaughter. She reefers to therapy ans support as "silly things" or something.

Admittedly the granddaughter does end up having been involved in the death of the victim because of something (I think it was some scheme or something involving bottled water) that she thought was wrong.) I won't deny that obviously murder is something I don't condone. The grandmother comes in to tell the granddaughter she's disowned and rips the necklace off her neck to give to the victim's family. Then there's this exchange.

Granddaughter: I just wanted a mother!
Grandmother: (in a sweet sugary voice) Well she died.

Part of the reason I get pissed thinking about this episode is that I watched it with my mom and when I commented about how horrible the grandmother was, my mother seemed to see my position as being upset that the grandmother didn't approve of murder. (and refused to see my position as anything else even when I explained it)

Like fucking no. If that were true I'd be pissed EVERYTIME the murderer doesn't get complete approval from their parent. Which i don't In fact often I cheer for the parent.

But in this case, it's not so much that the grandmother wasn't happy about what the granddaughter did. It's that she treated her granddaughter like SHIT since we saw them both on screen. She dismissed her need for support. She was so obviously emotionally abusive and just....urgh. Even the detectives thought she was an asshole.

Maybe if the old jerk hadn't treated her granddaughter like garbage and dismissed her needs after a death as "weak" and "silly" maybe her granddaughter would have been as successful as the friend of the family she looooooves so much.

I haven't watched that episode, but it sounds scarily similar to a skeleton in my family's closet.

I agree though, it's not about condoning murder. It's about recognizing where love, compassion and acceptance are/were due. It's shitty to shit on someone until they turn into a criminal or some other unforgivable disappointment, so that you have a convenient excuse to cut them out of your life.
