I've heard people express similar sentiments towards things like "Citizen Kane" -- groundbreaking, but not necessarily stellar or novel anymore, or even the best or most refined of someone's work (and considering how early Contract came in Eisner's longer-form storytelling, it'd be almost disheartening if it were). I feel like "classic" may be a better term for that sort of thing vs. "masterpiece".
