Free was actually pretty good about swimming strokes. It was just more focused on character drama than the sport. Also I always saw it as a show about friendship. I can understand why people with shipper goggles see it something more, but it was pretty tame.

From most of the episodes I saw, I agree with this comment.

I don't think the term "shipper goggles" applies when the show is intentionally homoerotic and is pandering to a specific audience. The fact that it focused on character drama more than the sport was how they were able to make it so homoerotic in the first place. Maybe you haven't watched sports anime outside of Free!, but they typically don't include massive amounts of blushing, crying on top of people, sharing beds, etc.

Also, that's not even mentioning the official art or the audio dramas where the boys even had convos about who they would date on the team if they were girls. (I also think there was one where Nagisa was rubbing lotion down on Rei or something).

I've watched Free! with two people who are not into slash shipping at all, one a woman who just prefers het and one a man who loves shows about people being friends, and they both loved it.
