Like...I guess this was just the last fandom I would expect that from. I'm in the Haikyuu!! fandom now and it's like there are definitely fandom juggernauts pairing wise, but nobody is at each other's throats in the least. I can't figure out what the difference is. :/

The difference is obvious. S1 of Free! ended with Rin/Haru being big, and, once the creators realized that Makoharu was bigger, they ended up pushing Mako/Haru in S2. Haikyuu!! never had that. Kagehina is solid because it's not like Hinata, the protagonist, has another guy whose relationship is developed like his and Kageyama's.

Also, the whole premise of Free! is fujoshi pandering while Haikyuu never was. It's about the competition and becoming better players through understanding teammates. Free! is super touchy feely and comes off more like a homoerotic drama than a legit sports anime. Kageyama and Hinata aren't going to start crying and hugging under cherry blossom trees. Therefore, the fandom doesn't really have scenes or official art to point how totally ~~gay and canon~~ their ships are like the Free! fandom does.
