"Not the main character because not their POV" is faulty thinking, though. Having a story told by a character can still mean another one is the main character - it's a popular stylistic choice (see Sherlock Holmes, for example).

That's a good example, but it really doesn't apply to Pacific Rim where the focus is not just Raleigh's POV but Raleigh's story, Raleigh's feelings, Raleigh's development over the course of the film, Raleigh saving the day, etc. It's not a story about Mako Mori as told by Raleigh.
