I'm an amateur icon-maker and I was just like "the expressions!"

Free! would be a fun series to make icons for no matter what characters you use!

Even at their most emotionally charged, it's obvious any rift between them comes from misunderstandings and hurt feelings, not true malice.\

That's very true, but fandom is often quite different then the source material. The attitudes aren't even remotely the same in most cases. In this case that's a bad thing.

I can't figure out what the difference is. :/

It's already been said, but I think the main difference is that Haikyuu!! doesn't ship-tease in the same way Free! does. When media ship-teases multiple couples fandom always finds some need to assert their ship as being more likely.
