I just can't help but wonder how/if their band would have taken off without the extra publicity. I mean... shooting bad, but what if that's all that ultimately makes them big?

("Big" being a relative term, yes I know they were touring and had international fans, but I've never heard of them before Paris)

They're really not that obscure.

I know I've been supporting them even more since it happened. They are amazing and I was sitting in a bar in Joshua Tree when everything started coming out and they are much loved there, obviously, and everyone was worried about their safety. I think their core fans won't let this shit get to them.

Mostly, I'm just confused about how, apparently, they do not actually perform death metal.

It was an inside joke among the band. There was some conversation where somebody referred to what was apparently a weak example of a good death metal band as "basically The Eagles of death metal," and it seemed like a funny misnomer or something.
