The thing is, I had extreme difficulties with reading comprehension as a child. I couldn't understand the components of a story, didn't know the what, how, and why of two things that were linked together, could barely get the definitions of new words. On top of that, I had to read boring books I didn't give a shit about. I got poor grades in school as a result.

The only thing that seemed to help was fanfiction. Why? It was relevant to me, and something I could understand. Because of fanfiction, I could follow plots, see signs of an upcoming event, understand the motivations of characters, and if anyone used a word I didn't know, well guess what? I looked it the fuck up, because I actually gave two shits.

While it's true I would eventually branch out to regular fiction, for a while, I was reading nothing but fanfiction. So really, you have no idea what might drive a person to read it.
