Yes, I wish there were a way for them to do this! Let people know what the main characters/ships are, but warn people who can't stand characters/ships even as side characters/ships away.

It would be better to modify their search engine so that people who want to avoid a ship or a character can just select "stories without X" or "Stories without X&Y pairing". Make it a one click shop instead of having to go picking through the tags, that way those stories don't even get returned on the search and there are less wrong hits to manually exclude.

You can do that right now, if you're willing to spend the five seconds of effort it takes to track down the tag ID, or download AO3 Savior so you can do it in advance.

If you want that implemented in the main search functionality, I have no idea how the fuck you would want them to implement it.

I think simplifying is very difficult from a design perspective and I don't want AO3 to lose important functionality because you have a phobia about tag spam.

If they can find a way to simplify it, they should. Obviously.
